Lives Are Meant to Be Changed was founded by Garrick Thames, a Boston native whose personal journey from adversity to empowerment fuels our mission. Growing up in Roxbury and facing his own battles with substance abuse, teenage fatherhood, and incarceration, Garrick transformed his life through education, mentorship, and a deep commitment to his community.
Inspired to help others navigate their paths to recovery and self-sufficiency, Garrick established our organization to offer a comprehensive suite of services aimed at breaking the cycle of addiction, unemployment, and recidivism. Since our inception, we have grown into a beacon of hope and support, providing resources for substance abuse recovery, mental health, education, employment, and parenting.
Our accomplishments include prestigious awards and recognitions, such as the Father of the Year Award and the Douglas Lomax Award, which highlight our impact on individuals and families.
From our humble beginnings to our current status as a cornerstone of community support, Lives Are Meant to Be Changed stands as a testament to the power of change and the collective strength of a community united in compassion and purpose.
At Lives Are Meant to Be Changed, we envision a world where every individual has the opportunity and support to overcome personal challenges and thrive. Our dream is to see communities transformed through the power of compassion, education, and sustained support, ensuring that no one is left behind because of past mistakes, substance abuse, or socioeconomic barriers.
We aim to be a leading force in breaking the cycle of addiction, unemployment, and recidivism by providing holistic and accessible services that address the root causes of social and personal issues. Our vision extends to fostering a society where mental health is prioritized, education is accessible to all, and families are strengthened through our dedicated parenting programs.
By empowering individuals to realize their full potential, we believe we can create a ripple effect of positive change, leading to healthier, happier, and more productive communities. Lives Are Meant to Be Changed is not just committed to changing lives today; we're dedicated to nurturing a future where every life transformed is a step towards a brighter, more inclusive world.

Cornelius Hill’s transformation journey began on January 28, 2003. After years of addiction, he committed to recovery through Narcotics Anonymous and rebuilt his life from the ground up. He launched a small business selling sneakers and clothing—and began giving away shoes and outfits to men and women returning from prison. What started as a gesture of dignity has grown into a mission of compassion.
A cancer survivor living with diabetes, he founded Mellitus to raise awareness about the disease and to show that with discipline and care, it can be managed. When the crisis at Mass and Cass worsened, he stepped in - not with judgment, but with love. He began personally driving people to detox, reminding them that someone cares.
His work is simple and profound: meet people where they are, remind them they are loved, and walk beside them as they reclaim their lives.
